Leggere la civiltà
Leggere la civiltà
This introduction to Italian culture is an ideal accompaniment to near beginner and intermediate level language courses, providing students with a broad yet detailed overview of Italian history, geography, art, music, literature and daily life.
The volume consists of multiple double-page dossiers, each focusing on a particular aspect of these broader cultural topics. The individual dossiers function equally well as stand-alone resources that can be used both in and out of the provided sequence. The dossiers include brief comprehension activities and are arranged in the following sections:
Geography: a dossier for each region (or couple of regions) together with a map and a data sheet about the cities and their inhabitants with key facts and figures. Brief literary extracts related to the location particular location can be found in the Literature section.
History: the topics in this section are organized chronologically to aid contextualization while the use of the past tenses has been significantly reduced to facilitate comprehension.
Art: introduces major artistic movements and events and provides key insights into Italian art and architecture;
Music: these dossiers provide an outline of Italian musical drama and include a few written extracts of some famous works;
Literature: this section spans eight centuries, each dossier presenting a particular author, their contextual background and an extract of one of the writer's texts.
Daily life: ten dossiers on individual aspects ranging from agriculture to industry, from the school system to contemporary youth culture.
At the end of each section there is a culture quiz. A final section devoted to role play activities can be accessed online as well as solutions to the exercises.
