 Ramón J Sender

Spanish novelist, essayist and educator, Ramon J. Sender was born in Chalamera (Huesca, Spain) in 1902 and is well known for his literary work, which primarily deals with Spanish history and social issues.

During the early decades of the Twentieth Century (1910s-1920s) Sender served with the Spanish Army in Morocco, after which he settled in Madrid and worked for the "El Sol" newspaper until 1929 when he started writing for more radical newspapers. He took part in anarchist activities but soon found these disappointing and so he became a communist. He later renounced this ideology during the Spanish Civil War and in 1938 he was exiled to France and later went to live in Mexico and the USA.

Sender's works crudely analyse social reality, from a revolutionary standpoint. He is author of "Imán" (1930), based on the Moroccan War; "Mr Witt en el cantón" (1935) which won him the "Premio Nacional de literatura"; "Crónica del alba" (1942), which is largely autobiographical; "Requiém por un campesino español" (1960), for which he is particularly well known; "El bandido adolescente" (1965), based on the gunman Billy the Kid, and "Lope de Aguirre" (1968) among others.

Sender died in San Diego, USA in 1982.<
