Max Frisch

Max Frisch

 Max Frisch

Born in Zürich in 1911 Max Rudolf Frisch is one of Swizterland's best known and most influential postwar authors. He studied German literature at the University of Zürich but had to give up his studies due to financial problems following the death of his father. He began work as a journalist for the Neuer Zürcher Zeitung before returning to university to study architecture in 1936. His diaries for 1946 - 1949 vividly describe his experiences of postwar Europe and also contain first drafts of some of his later works. His literary breakthrough came in 1954 with his novel "Stiller", followed by "Homo Faber", "Biedermann und die Brandstifter" and "Andorra". From the mid 1950s he worked as a freelance writer and his works examined the issues of identity and alienation in modern society and he continued to publish extracts from his diaries. He was awarded the Georg-Büchner-Preis in 1958 and Heinrich-Heine-Pries in 1989. Max Frisch died in Zürich on April 4th 1991.
