 Theodor Storm

Hans Theodor Woldsen Storm (14 September 1817 - 4 July 1888), commonly known as Theodor Storm, was a German writer. He is considered to be one of the most important figures of German realism and his novellas are among the finest in German literature.

Storm was born in the small town of Husum, on the west coast of Schleswig, then a formally independent duchy ruled by the King of Denmark.

Storm went to school in Husum and Lübeck and studied law in Kiel and Berlin. While still a law student in Kiel he published a first volume of verse together with the brothers Tycho and Theodor Mommsen.

From 1843 until his admission was revoked by Danish authorities in 1852 he worked as a lawyer in his home town Husum. In 1853 the Danish occupation of Schleswig forced him to move to Potsdam, moving on to Heiligenstadt in Thuringia in 1856. His strong patriotic feelings are expressed in his poetry from this period. He returned to Husum in 1865 after Schleswig had come under Prussian ruly and became a district magistrate.

By this time he had begun to concentrate on writing novellas. One of his most important early works is Immensee, a moving story of the vanished happiness of childhood, which, like so many of his works, is coloured by a haunting nostalgia. As his writing matured his novellas displayed subtler psychological insight, greater realism, and a wider scope of themes - including class tensions, social problems, and religious bigotry - expressing his concern with man's islolation and struggle with his fate.

In 1880 he retired to Hadermarschen, where he wrote his last and greatest novella Der Schimmelreiter. His other major works include Pole Poppenspäler, Aquis submersus, and the novella Im Schloss.
