The textbook presents Italian grammar in context through a variety of texts and dialogues. The principle structures are addressed in 60 units, analysing the most frequent uses in clear and simple language. The grammar rules and explanations are accompanied by a multitude of written and listening exercises. The book also includes 60 short tests (one for each unit) plus helpful appendices on grammatical terminology and phonetics. The answers to all the exercises are provided at the back of the book along with an index for easy reference. The audio tracks are available online free-of-charge as well as a range of complementary activities and interactive games and resources, including access to the textbook in digital format. Access the digital resources via a personal code which you will find printed inside the book.

If you are one of those people who can pick up a language through listening to others speak, you can forego this book. For everyone else, it's "No pain, no gain". As an A2 level hobby learner of Italian, this book has provided the necessary structure to make sense of the Easy Reader books I also purchased. The A1 to C1 ability range that is covered by the book is of course very wide. Excercises are divided into easy and more difficult, with answers and end-of-chapter tests provided. Understanding exercise sentences often requires the help of a pocket dictionary and later chapters of the book are geared - as the book says - to higher abilities. However, with good explanations in English, this colourful book is good company for those who wish to master the more fundamental levels of grammar and dip into the more advanced stuff when the occasion arises and you feel confident enough to do so. There is rarely an effort-free way to acquire a language but I find this book to be an excellent guide and foundation for making progress.

This is a really useful resource and a comprehensive overview of Italian grammar, and it's much easier having the explanations in English for me. It's an excellent aid to use alongside a course to really embed grammar knowledge. The layout is compact but clear. The exercise are helpful as they also offer new vocabulary and use a range of activities (including listening opportunities).
It also has the added benefit of an ebook version which is useful when cross-checking answers. Overall the grammar is explained well and is clear, however on occasion I've found the sections a little brief, as such I use a supplement (Collins easy learning italian grammar) when I want a bit more detail. Otherwise I'm really pleased with this book and that it will cover my years of study.
