'The Tempest' is the last of Shakespeare's works and is, for many, the culmination of his entire creative process. This allegorical, utopian, realistic, romantic, pastoral and mythical piece is presented to us as a gripping and enigmatic tale full of hidden meanings.

This work is thought to have been inspired by a famous shipwreck that occurred in 1609 near to Bermuda. The passenger, who was thought to have died, was saved, and lived for a time on a paradise island. In the midst of a debate on the discovery and colonisation of the New World, Shakespeare uses this story to address issues such as the problems of relationships with other cultures and the prospects of coexistance or subjugation; encounters between the civilised and the savage; the primary and instinctive versus the rational; the possibility of creating a community with a new social order based on other values, and the obstacles that may arise when attempting to enforce this.

Furthermore, 'The Tempest' is an extreme reflection on the boundaries between fiction and reality.
