The Rainbow and the Heather.

This eastern town of Rzeczpospolita (the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania) Polish people used to call a castle, and Russians - a fortress in the West of their kingdom. This is where East meets West. A young Polish nobleman Nikolaus Vrozhesk comes here in spring 1632, and a wedding photographer from Moscow Pavel Kostochkin - in February 2015. Both curious they're looking at the castle-fortress... What awaits them here? Love is the answer for both - for a granddaughter of an icon painter and healer in the first case, and for someone else's bride in the second case. They will also have battles and adventures on the streets of Smolensk, in snowy fields and impassable forests. Two personal stories create flashes which illuminate the history of the whole country. Also the legendary Radziwill Chronicle, which was probably created in Smolensk, makes it possible to feel the breath of the even more distant past, as for good reason it's called a window into the world of Ancient Rus. And the windows to the modern world are Pavel Kostochkin's black and white photos, which also reflect the traces of that memorable Russia.

The book has been included in the short nominee list of the Big Book prize 2018.
