The book tells the story of Tiago E. Molina and his friends, a group of young students, who are "educated" in a relentless and violent period of Peru. They learn to survive in an environment where racial prejudice and differences between social and economic classes are well established; the Maoist guerrilla group known as the S.L terrorised the country with assassinations, bombings, beheadings and massacres. Also the government is involved in double-dealings. The reader will discover a web of corruption and bribery run by a sinister character nicknamed "El Challahuita".

Silva-Passuni's narration is so vivid as he uses his words very carefully and take pains in describing his characters and the scenarios. You will have the feeling of being one of the boys: walking in the streets of Lima, in times of crime and corruption but also in times of love and friendship. The novel opens with this line: "In Lima to be or not to be means the same thing".
