The Friulian language followed an autonomous linguistic evolution compared to the other Italic vernaculars, in parallel with the political events of the country. For many centuries, from 1077 to 1420, Friuli was an autonomous state, the Patrie dal Friûl, governed both secularly and spiritually by the Patriarch of Aquileia, second only to the Pope of Rome in the ecclesiastical hierarchy. Although Friulian literature was fertile in Pasolini.s time, it was already ancient. The first administrative texts in Friulian were certified in the twelfth century while the first poetical works in the form of sonnets, songs and ballads date back to the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, written for an elite circle of readers.
