The poetry of Osip Mandelshtam, one of the pantheon of Russian twentieth-century poets along with Boris Pasternak, Anna Akhmatova and Marina Tsvetaeva and in the eyes of some the greatest of these, magnificently merges the European past at its best with the Russian experience at its worst. Like many of his country's best, he died before his time in a Stalinist camp.
'Mandelshtam's precision, musicality and continuity make him one of the most translatable poets Russia has ever produced,' one modern English critic has said. That is, given a translator capable of hearing these qualities. The first of the very few of these was James Greene. His ground-breaking translations began to appear in the 1970s; the present edition first appeared some dozen years after the first, which was found by Mandelshtam's widow Nadezhda, author of famous memoirs, to be 'the best I ever saw'. This expanded and revised third edition contains over a hundred poems and includes the original texts at the end of the book.
'As never before, there is no line of the Russian poems that is not made poetry in English.' Donald Davie
