Spring has sprung, and there’s certainly a lot to celebrate…
In keeping with its etymological roots, April represents a period of hope, promise and positivity, after a prolonged period of darkness and dormancy. Derived from the Latin verb aperire (“to open”), April is synonymous with revival and renewal; it’s the perfect opportunity to take on a new challenge, to pick up where we left off, or to appreciate all that is dear to us.
The humble book provides us with all of these possibilities, and more besides… A seemingly silent object, it has the ability to speak to us in a unique way, stirring up a whole host of emotions and pushing us to ponder over the complexities of life. Amusing, tear-jerking, provocative and insightful, literature of any genre – be it factual or fictional – can transport us to different places and times, thereby challenging our beliefs and inspiring us to explore the world in which we live. It also serves to open our eyes to other people’s views and to respect humanity through our actions and words.
A magical gift that can be opened time and time again, the mysterious book can teach us something new each time it is read.
So, why not harness the power of reading this month and spring into action? 📘🌺
Wednesday 12th April is D.E.A.R. Day: an important reminder to ‘Drop Everything and Read’, or, at the very least, to devote more time to the gift of reading, in spite of our busy lives…
Speaking of gifts... April is also a month of birthdays, witnessing the arrival of Shakespeare, Harper Lee, Hans Christian Andersen and other literary greats… As if we needed any more justification to celebrate?!
